The Spanish national team in our studio in Madrid

In May 2022, we had the privilege of filming the Spanish national football team. We packed up our studio and transported it to Madrid. They all came through our green screen, from Unai Simon to Pau Torres, and they were all amazed when they saw themselves as 3D volumetric video.

Ascension Day 2022 – a day off for most people, but a day to dismantle the studio for us. Dismantle? Yes, because the studio had to be loaded onto a truck and sent to Spain by the end of the day. Everyone pitched in! In half a day, the entire studio was dismantled, packed into flight cases, loaded onto the truck, and departed.

A few days later, the 4DR Studios team set off for Spain, and honestly, there was a great sense of relief when the truck with the studio arrived safely. And all of this took place in a truly unique location, namely at La Ciudad del Fútbol de la Real Federación Española de Fútbol – the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the official training center of the Spanish national football team.

The big day

On May 30th, we had the pleasure of welcoming the star players of Spain to our studio! First, outside the studio, a quick run-through of the script, and then the recording in what we affectionately call our green bucket.

We captured several different shots of each player, including a still shot and a signature movement. Unai Simón dives to the ground to save an imaginary ball, and Dani Olmo shows how he celebrates his goals.

After the recordings, a pre-render was created using a few frames, providing the players with immediate feedback.

Attention to detail

During these preview renders, the camera captured impressive details. From tattoos to the uniforms, and even the studs on the football shoes were accurately converted into 3D. The images below showcase the appearance and texture of the studs. This level of detail and lifelikeness is characteristic of volumetric video.

Even after the post-production of these images, this level of detail remained intact. However, the full motion is truly revealed, offering Matrix-like camera shots where you can slow down the action mid-air and rotate around it.

Endless possibilities

Fan engagement is currently the number one reason for sports organizations to utilize volumetric assets. We have already developed various applications in partnership with PSV, including stadium tours and unique fan cams. Additionally, in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), we enabled the celebration of goals by all members of the Dutch national team at fans’ homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to augmented reality concepts, there are plenty of opportunities to incorporate these volumetric assets into virtual reality productions. Imagine a virtual reality game where you can take penalty shots with David Raya and Unai Simón.

There are countless applications for volumetric video. If you’re curious about some examples of existing concepts, check out the rest of our portfolio and reach out to us to explore how your concept can leverage volumetric video.
